The Implantation Procedure
The traditional implant procedure performed routinely in dental clinics around the world takes place in phases.
- The process begins with an assessment of your mouth and teeth to build a treatment plan. You may be required to have a dental CT or panoramic X-ray. Depending upon the condition of your gum or bone, you may need a bone graft, which is done prior to the implantation.
- The implant is positioned in the bone. This process is relatively quick and performed in the office under local anesthestic. Your gums and mouth are given time to heal, and for the implant to integrate with the bone— between three to six months —before the next phase.
- During the next phase, your dentist or oral surgeon “uncovers” the implant, places an abutment on top of it. An impression is made of your mouth, so the lab technician can make an accurate crown or other prosthetic (restoration) to fit over your implant —and restore your natural smile.
Today, it is possible to install dental implants in one day (see “immediate loading” below). Based on your existing bone, health status, and other factors, your dentist or oral surgeon will decide if you are a candidate.
Immediate loading dental implants
In response to the market demand to reduce the overall time of the implant procedure, immediate loading implants (“same-day”prostheses/teeth), represent a new treatment option. The implant and the tooth restoration are implanted the same day. Previously, dentists and oral surgeons avoided putting force(“load”) on the implant until the surrounding tissue had healed, and osseointegration occurred, but with advances in technology – and greater experience — implant placement has become much more accurate, reducing the need to wait.
Immediate load implants are especially advantageous if the missing tooth is in the front of the mouth. Your dentist or oral surgeon will determine if you are a candidate for immediate load implants.
